Equi-Phonics is a means of communication
Equi: equine or horse
Phonics: A method of teaching reading and spelling based upon the phonetic interpretation of ordinary spelling. (Webster)

Teach your horse his ABC's before you ask him to read. Learn to communicate with your horse. You really can establish a relationship with him.

For too many years people have been saying that horses are stupid. I have found this to be absolutely false. They are able to pick up on the slightest "mood" from us. Can we say the same? Do you wonder what your horse is thinking?

Horses can tell what we are going to do, concerning them, before we do it most of the time! Getting "in tune" with them involves using all of your senses and body language to "speak" to them, as well as to understand what they are conveying to us.

We can all do it. It takes time, effort, and commitment. It is not a quick fix to issues you may be having, but it is a lasting fix. It all starts on the ground.

"Ground manners" has become a catch phrase, but it is the answer to all riding problems!

If a horse is not taught the basics of the horse/human relationship, he will "get out of control". He is then called a problem horse, when he is actually a confused horse.

The primary steps with groundwork, and then under saddle, is to get the horse to understand "I have something to say to you."

It is you and the horse communicating without a spoken language-- we learn "horse talk" and they learn "human".

We need to "re-wire' the horses' thinking about us. We need to "re-wire" our own thinking about them.

We can cause desirable behaviors to become "habit" and therefore those habits to become his natural reaction to certain cues or behaviors from you.

Because horses are a reaction looking for a spot to happen, a learned reaction to something scary would be far safer than an unknown reaction.
